The park is comprised of 1,400 acres of land that was formerly a coal mine. You’ll have access to miles of trails that are suited to all skill levels. Activities at Redbird State Recreation Area 

The coal mining history of Redbird State Recreation Area has created an interesting topography that’s ideal for everything from off-roading to mushroom picking. You can easily access lakes to fish in or hike over the small slopes across the 1,400-acre property. Redbird State Recreation Area is also full of non-motorized biking trails, where avid mountain bikers can bike through thick woods and over challenging hills. 

Future projects for the park include picnic areas, more accessible trails for hikers and bikers, and areas where visitors can learn more about the coal mining operations that once took place on the property. 

Redbird State Recreation Area Fees and Hours 

Sullivan off-roading enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that the trails at Redbird State Recreation Area are open seven days a week — from dusk to dawn. Entrance fees are as follows: 

Motorized (Off-Road) Trail Use

  • Daily ORV Trail Use: $15
  • Annual ORV Trail Use Permit: $95 
  • Out-of-State ORV Trail Use Permit: $20 

Non-Motorized Trail Use: 

  • Ranges from $2 to $70, depending on the activity.

Redbird State Recreation Area is located about 46 minutes from Burger Chrysler Jeep. Follow these directions to get there: 

  • Continue to US-150 E/S 3rd St/S US Hwy 41. 
  • Head west toward US-150 E/S 3rd St/S US Hwy 41.
  • Turn left toward US-150 E/S 3rd St/S US Hwy 41.
  • Turn left onto US-150 E/S 3rd St/S US Hwy 41. 
  • Continue to follow US-150 E/S US Hwy 41. 
  • Pass by Steak ‘n Shake (on the left). 
  • Continue on IN-54. 
  • Drive to County Rd. 350 N. in Stockton Township.
  • Turn left onto IN-54.
  • Turn left to stay on IN-54.
  • Turn right to stay on IN-54.
  • Make a slight left onto E County Rd. 50 S. 
  • Continue onto E Monroe St. 
  • Continue onto County Rd 350 N. 
  • Redbird State Recreation Area will be on the left.
